The Importance of the Conscience

I Tim 1:5  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

  Watchman Nee tells us that the conscience is a component of or a barometer of the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 2:15  Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;

Their consciences also bearing witness with their hearts and between one another (in their conscience);  their collective thoughts constantly accusing or defending. (Seems like the operation of the voice of the Holy Spirit!)

We must notice that this function of the conscience has been given to everybody on planet earth regardless of belief. Whoever denies the existence of God, denies himself, for God speaks to everybody in their conscience.

Romans 9:1  I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,

  My conscience bears witness to me in the realm or world that belongs to the Holy Spirit. (My conscience operates within the world that belongs to the Holy Spirit.)

Therefore, a pure conscience is one guide to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

1Ti 4:2  Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron (Kauteriazo)

 Cauterize: Burn, sear, or freeze (tissue) using a hot iron or electric current or a caustic agent; The Free on Line Dictionary.

We see today many with a cauterized conscience.

A pure conscience is a guide to the voice of God, for everybody, regardless of religion of belief.  Our conscience shows us that God exists, for He speaks to every human being what is right, or wrong.

There is no excuse by anybody to say that God does not exist for He speaks to great and small, of every country, and every faith, in their conscience.

When a person habitually rejects God, he hardens his heart and cauterizes his conscience, so that by hardening and cauterizing the person loses the guiding sense of the voice of God.

The person become blinder than a bat and go into self-destruction.

We see this in politics, where people have betrayed what is morally right to push an agenda and have become both hardened and cauterized.

This is why spending time with God and maintaining a cutting edge freshness of God’s voice in the heart and conscience is essential.

2 Corinthians 1:12  For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity (haplotes) and godly sincerity (heilikrineia), not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

Haplotes: Is soundness, wholeness, integrity, singleness of mind and simplicity, in the sense of avoiding all distractions to focus singly and simply upon God.

Heilikrineia: Comes from the word helios, which is the sun. Krineo , is to judge.

Thus, to judge by the rays of the sun. If the window pane of your conscience is clean and pure the sun will shine through it. If you have betrayed your conscience it is likewise judged by the sun as a filthy window pane.  You are your own judge, of how much you have betrayed your conscience.

2 Timothy 1:3  I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

I thank God whom I render religious service, in a world that belongs to a pure conscience. Are you offering your service to God in world that belongs to a pure conscience?

There goes the cheap grace message out the window, that because God loves us and will save everybody, we can live as we want. Nonsense! For those who profess to follow Jesus, God’s requirement is a pure conscience.
